Release Date: October 4, 2013
Runtime: 91 minutes
Rating: PG-13
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures
Director: Alfonso Cuarón
Cast: Sandra Bullock; George Clooney; Ed Harris (voice)

This is one spectacular movie! Alfonso Cuarón creates a sort-of “2001: A Space Odyssey” for the 21st century. It is tense, expertly filmed and choreographed, and beautifully acted by both George Clooney and an Oscar-worthy Sandra Bullock. “Gravity” grabs you right from the beginning and carries you along for 90 breathless minutes and when it’s over, believe me, you will need to catch your breath. Studio: Samuel Goldwyn Films
Director: Richard Kelly
Cast: Dwayne Johnson; Sarah Michelle Gellar; Seann William Scott; Justin Timberlake; Nora Dunn; John Larroquette; Bai Ling; Mandy Moore; Jon Lovitz; Cheri Oteri…many others!

Whoa, is this one boondoggle of a movie! Sporting a cast and a scope that would make Cecil B. DeMille salivate, Richard Kelly’s follow up to his cult classic “Donnie Darko” is one of those not-too-distant futuristic commentaries, but it is so all over the place you almost need an org chart. Release Date: August 2, 2013
Runtime: 99 minutes
Rating: Unrated
Studio: IFC Films
Director: Paul Schrader
Cast: Lindsay Lohan; James Deen; Nolan Gerard Funk; Amanda Brooks; Gus Van Sant

You would think that a collaboration between the writer/director of “American Gigolo” and “Hardcore” and the writer of “American Psycho” and “Less Than Zero” would make for some titillating cinema. As it turns out, it’s more lukewarm bath than sizzling heat. Continue reading

Runtime: 96 minutes
Rating: PG-13
Studio: Universal Pictures
Director: Robert Schwentke
Cast: Jeff Bridges; Ryan Reynolds; Kevin Bacon; Mary-Louise Parker; Stephanie Szostak; Marisa Miller; James Hong

OMG this movie sucks. Basically, this is an attempt to reimagine the “Men In Black” franchise with new stars and new monsters. The story is essentially the same, but whatever it was that made the “MIB” movies work is fatally absent here. Continue reading

Release Date: June 28, 2013 (NY & LA)
Runtime: 90 minutes
Rating: R
Studio: El Deseo S.A. / Sony Pictures Classics
Director: Pedro Almodóvar
Cast: Javier Cámara; Lola Dueñas; Cecilia Roth; Raúl Arévalo; Antonio de la Torre; Hugo Silva; Carlos Areces

This is the latest from flamboyant Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar (“Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown”). I was really psyched to see this since I enjoy Almodóvar’s work and am a sucker for any movie that has to do with air travel. Alas, it is with barely veiled indifference that I report that “I’m So Excited!” is nothing to get too excited about. Continue reading

Release Date: August 30, 2013
Runtime: 105 minutes
Rating: R
Studio: Entertainment One
Director: Brian De Palma
Cast: Rachel McAdams; Noomi Rapace; Karoline Herfurth; Paul Anderson

De Palma is up to his old cinematic tricks (that’s a good thing) in his latest, a remake of the French noir “Love Crime.”

Rachel McAdams, the best Hitchcockian blonde since Kim Novak in “Vertigo,” plays Christine, the head of an ad agency in Berlin. Noomi Rapace (“The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” – Swedish version) is her employee, Isabelle, in what would be a sort of account executive position, I guess. The two have an ideal working relationship, until Christine takes credit for Isabelle’s campaign idea on a major account. Then the tug of war begins, which will include manipulation, humiliation and, eventually, murder. Oh, what fun!

Provincetown International Film Festival

Good Day, Movie Lovers!

I’m here at the Provincetown International Film Festival in scenic Provincetown, MA, on the tip of Cape Cod. Some very notable movies playing here this week. I’m psyched to see “Lovelace,” about 70’s porn star Linda Lovelace of “Deep Throat” fame. Hopefully afterwards I’ll be able to catch the new Brian DePalma movie, “Passion,” with Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace.

The new movie from Pedro Almodóvar, “I’m So Excited,” is also showing here. He’s always an interesting filmmaker with a very particular style. A true auteur.

I would love to be able to see the documentary “Continental,” about the famous Continental Baths in New York City, but it’s playing at the same time as “Lovelace.” Oh well! You win some, you lose some. Kind of like how my baseball cap blew right off my head into the Atlantic Ocean on the ferry ride over here!

Release Date: November 9, 2012
Runtime: 143 minutes
Rating: PG-13
Studio: MGM / Columbia Pictures (Sony)
Director: Sam Mendes
Cast: Daniel Craig; Judi Dench; Javier Bardem; Ralph Fiennes; Naomie Harris; Bérénice Lim Marlohe; Ben Whishaw; Rory Kinnear; Albert Finney

Every time I see a James Bond movie it reminds me how much I would love to be James Bond. It’s every male’s escapist fantasy: you’re an undercover spy, you get to play with lots of hi-tech gadgets, you get to bed lots of incredibly beautiful women in exotic locales around the world. What’s not to love? (Well, in my case, I could do without bedding the beautiful women part, but you get my point). That’s the reason I think that Ian Fleming’s series has remained so incredibly popular ever since James Bond’s first cinematic appearance in “Dr. No” in 1962. Continue reading

Runtime: 117 minutes
Rating: R
Studio: Touchstone Pictures (Disney)
Director: John Badham
Cast: Richard Dreyfuss; Emilio Estevez; Madeleine Stowe; Aidan Quinn; Forest Whitaker; Dan Lauria

This is a harmless, rather insignificant movie. No belly laughs, but some chuckles, as Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez keep an eye on Madeleine Stowe hoping her thug ex-boyfriend will show up and they can nab him. Continue reading
